Peeling off the layers…

Our main variety of Grapefruit is Star Ruby. The large round citrus fruit has a yellow and rose skin and beautiful blush pink flesh inside. Star Ruby’s have the darkest flesh of the red grapefruits. The fruits are a mixture of sweet and bitter, the redder the flesh the sweeter the fruit. The peel has a medium thickness full of intense oils.

Botanist believe grapefruit occurred from a cross between a pomelo and wild orange. The Star Ruby occurred by way of a natural mutation on a tree in San Benito, Texas in the 1930’s.

Grapefruits are loved for their freshly squeezed tangy juice, marmalade and as a complement to a delicious breakfast.

Pomelo’s and Grapefruits are often confused. Grapefruits are descendants of Pomelo’s that are the largest of the citrus family. Unripe grapefruit are yellow orange while Pomelo’s are green. Pomelo’s have a thicker rind with a lot more pith than Grapefruits. Pomelo’s are more oblong where grapefruit are rounder. Grapefruit are more bitter than Pomelo’s which has a milder taste. The pink varieties, like the Star Ruby, have a tangy sweet flavour.

There are quite a few varieties of grapefruit. The skin ranges from green to gold and the flesh can be yellow, pink or reddish.
