The Valencia is a medium sized orange with a thin, fine textured, bright orange skin. The Valencia is available later in the season than the Navel orange. The Valencia is the best orange to juice but may have some seeds.
Limonin is a natural compound that turns the juice bitter. The compound in this orange is only found in the seeds which makes the juice perfect for storage after the seeds have been removed.
In the mid 1900’s an American pioneer and agronomist William Wolfskill found the hybrid on his farm in South Carolina. He named the orange after a city in Spain, Valencia, which was known for their sweet oranges. There has however also been claims that it was discovered on the Azores Island of Portugal.
